Nairobi Trip Mar 09

img_6630.JPG

Michael, Lean Choo, CN, Sally & I went on a missions trip to Kenya, Nairobi from 26 February to 4 March 2009. All of us belong to the same pastoral group supporting the missions work in Nairobi. Except Sally, the rest of us have actually gone for missions in Nairobi before.

Lisa and Li Chuang are our 2 sisters church-planting in Nairobi. They have been doing missions there since 2005.

One of the challenges that our church-planters faced was in their outreach to Kenyan men. Together with the church-planters, we have been praying to God for many years for greater effectiveness in this area.

Our prayers were answered in the last quarter of 2008! God has blessed us by bringing in many Kenyan brothers into the Nairobi caregroup. Most of these Kenyan brothers are university undergraduates while the rest have just graduated and have begun their working life as professionals. All of them have a heart for God and are eager to serve Him.

Hence the key objective of our missions trip was to equip and disciple these Kenyan brothers. Basically we went for a retreat together and 6 Kenyan brothers (James K, James O, Vincent, Ernest, Javan & David) and 1 Kenyan sister (Faith) joined us.

The first day we went out with some of the Kenyans to visit the Animal Orphanage where the orphaned animals from the safaris are reared. There we manage to see up close and personal some of the Kenyan wildlife. We even got to pat and take photographs with a real, live cheetah! We also went to the rooftop of the tallest building in Nairobi, the Kenyan International Convention Centre, where we got a bird’s eye view of the entire city of Nairobi. Through this outing, we got to know many of the Kenyans better.

In the next few days, we had a wonderful time of training with the Kenyans. Sally & CN taught them many simple yet fun games and ice-breakers which they could play in their caregroups. CN taught some of the brothers some simple guitar chords and shared with them some tips on playing the guitar. I shared a lesson on Covenanted Relationships, Michael on Spiritual Gifts & Lean Choo on Praise & Worship.

On Sunday, we attended the caregroup service. It was a fantastic time worshipping God together with all the Kenyans brothers and sisters. Michael preached during the service and many were blessed and inspired by the sermon. After service, we even had our very own “Amazing Race” where we formed teams with the Kenyans and ran around Nairobi city center to complete various tasks!

On Monday, one of our Kenyan brothers, James K, invited us to his hometown of Nakuru. Nakuru is a small city a few hours drive away from Nairobi. 2 other Kenyan brothers Javan and James O went with us on this trip. We had a great time meeting James K’s parents and visiting his house and his farm. En route, we also visited Lake Elementaita to view the flamingoes.

On Tueday, we went down to Juja which is a small city an hour away from Nairobi. James K brought us to the Roman Catholic orphanage which he volunteers in. We had a splendid time touring the orphanage and interacting with the children there. After that, we went down to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (or JKUAT). Lisa and Li Chuang are trying to outreach to the undergraduates there by organizing a weekly caregroup at JKUAT. We saw many visitors for the caregroup that day. We had a time of Praise & Worship, Michael shared a teaching and we also prayed for the Kenyans.

All in all, our trip to Kenya was a fruitful one. Many of the Kenyans feedback to us that they were encouraged and they felt ministered by God’s Word and His presence. We too had a excellent time sharing God’s love with the Kenyans. We pray that God will continue to grow the church in Nairobi from strength to strength and continue to make a difference in more and more lives in Kenya.

Bordering the US, Mexico’s culture is noticeably different from its neighbour. Mexico is home to nearly 100M people, 22M of which live in the capital - Mexico City. The virtual melting pot that is the US doesn’t effect Mexico’s culture, its slow pace and its various Indigenous populations - including the Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatan, Maya and Aztec, whose customs and beliefs have greatly shaped the unique culture, art and tradition that is alive and well.

Despite its culture, the disparity between rich and poor is unmistakable in Mexico. Traveling off of the resort one will see much evidence of the poor living in very meager conditions. In terms of culture, whether rich or poor, family and friends are greatly celebrated by the Mexican people. Its cultural festivals, religious holidays and traditional social gatherings focus and celebrate family. Spanish colonial influences were responsible for introducing the culture to many of its strong Roman Catholic traditions and religious icons.

High Season (end Dec to Easter) – The high season boasts calm, warm weather, perfect for snorkeling, diving & fishing.

Trip Objectives:
1. Discover Mexico City and get to know its people in a cross-continental culture
2. Explore the possibilities of entry vehicles and job opportunities

Local updates

shirley-melinda.jpg

With effect from 1 February, youth pastor Shirley Melinda will be leading as the Missions head in our church. Do contact her for missions matters.

For those who would like to give financially to missions in general or to specific teams or tentmakers, do write to us. Thanks for your generosity and giving spirit.

Besides the different missions events organised by your groups, do also visit other missions happenings throughout the church e.g. Love Mexico, Love Africa etc. Here’s an invitation by Adults district leader, Ng Choon Yam (AG2) to their SMS:

Super Mission Sunday (SMS) is a gathering of people who wants to do our part in missions support. For every first Sunday of each month, we will be gathering in Danz People Studio from 9.45am to 11am for a time of learning, equipping, updating of and praying for the South American churches (Peru, Ecuador and Chile). Hear from South America churchplanters who have returned as they share about their experiences, lessons learned and be imparted with the spirit of missions from the very people who has laboured and brought the Gospel to the lands beyond Singapore.

david-and-sharon-guanawan.jpgHere’s another story from David and Sharon Guanawan. They are parents to Theophilus aged 3 and they just had their second child in December.

1. What motivated/inspired you to join the pioneering work in Toronto?

We are willing to go to any developed country as we think that our giftings together are able to serve the needs of the people. Since Toronto is a country that is open for exploration under Hope Singapore, we signed on! David has a burden to reach out to people through apologetics. Sharon loves the arts and meeting people from all walks of life.

2. What is your greatest challenge in relocating to North America?

Relocating to anywhere requires change of mindset, adaptation to the culture, norms and even unknowns. Although at this point, we are unable to pinpoint specific challenges. However, some of what we think might require adjustments are financial planning as well as management of family with young kids without a helper. Of course, being away from family members would also require some getting used to as well.

3. How are you preparing yourself for missions?

There are many facets to missions that we need to learn about, particularly about the country, culture, people group and needs area. Both David & I are avid learners and we believe in continuously upgrading ourselves wherever we are. As our heart is willing, the Lord leads. Sharon is looking forward to complete her keyboard training in worship while David is currently into his final years of Master of Ministerial Study.

We are still looking out for opportunities where we can learn cross-cultural mission, team dynamics and other aspects of doing missions.

Learning never stops, serving God is a mission. We look for opportunities to serve where we are, be it now or in the future; making a difference as a Stay-at-home-mom (SAHM), in the marketplace, helping out in our neighbourhood, or to fill a need in the church. We are willing for God to mould us and strengthen our faith.

4. What do you look forward most in going for missions?

It will be a place of unfamiliarity where even the most mundane things in life will be different. It will be a humbling experience to start. Yet, our hearts are pounding for the adventure that God is opening up for us. We have waited several years for this. Finally, getting connected with the people we are reaching out to and seeing people grow and church mature will be the high point.

david-and-alice-kong.jpgDavid & Alice Kong recently shared how they came about making one of the biggest decisions in their lives. They are the parents of twins Martin & Mervin both aged 6 and Moses aged 4.

1. What motivated/inspired you to join the pioneering work in Toronto?

It is to obey God’s greatest command. Firstly, it was a hands-on-the-ground with the se ed church in Toronto via a mission trip, interacting with the existing members, and also getting a feel of the culture and the needs of the residents. There are many people who struggle with daily living even in the developed city like Toronto. Christians are to be the light of the world, and my family would want to be a lamp that God uses in this city. Everyone needs hope and only through Jesus can true everlasting hope be found.

2. What is your greatest challenge in relocating to North America?

It is to make a living. It is acclimatizing our three kids, my wife and my self to a new culture, different lifestyle, and other changes required in the new place. It is understanding local culture, expectations and working within their system which is much different from that in Singapore.

3. How are you preparing yourself for missions?

While waiting for Permanent Residence Status, we are getting updates on Canadian political, job market, cultural changes from websites. We are keeping our financial commitments low while in Singapore. We meet regularly with the other two couples (Richard/Yuet Mei & David/Sharon) in Singapore who are going to Toronto. Also we are seeking through contacts in Toronto and seeking God for wisdom in the area of starting a business.

4. What do you look forward most in going for missions?

It is to meet the needs of people. It is to see God work his miracles victoriously through the lives of believers. It is also the challenge of being a hands-on tentmaker in the mission field.

Delia Ng came back about 4 months ago after almost 6 years of adventure in Peru. She was the leader of the youth ministry CREW (Called to Reach the Entire World). Here’s her testimony as part of her re-entry exercise:

Specific testimonies of God’s supernatural interventions and blessings in my own life and others while away on the field.

- Financial providence: I was almost going broke in my second month there, and God blessed me with tuition assignments. Every year, our salary increased and we were able to grow the church with His financial providence.

- Answered prayers: I prayed for protection over my family, and there wasn’t a single incident in all these 6 years!

- My sheep has been praying for her family. One night, a crisis broken out in the family. She was hysterical, but found strength in God which in turn made her the pillar of strength for her family. Miraculously, her dad, who used to persecute her strongly, decided that he needs to seek God in this hopeless situation. He brought the whole family to church, humbly sought prayers, and allowed God to be head of the family. Today, the family is committed in our church, growing, serving and astonishing many friends and relatives with their testimony!

- The oldest child of a family in our church was always cold to God – typical adolescent syndrome. But his heart began to change and he decided to commit his life to God by going for water baptism. The week after his baptism, he met with a near-fatal accident, but was sustained by God. He was in coma for a few months, but finally woke up. It was painful and easy to doubt God, but the family and church persevered in prayer and faith. Today, he is recovering well, and has become a new creation – very joyful and sociable youth, praising God will all his might!

wlwp-in-enews.JPG

Joshua & Hannah Yeo returned last month from 5.5 years of exciting cross-cultural ministry.

Read how they flourish in the basin of God’s goodness as they obey God’s call to missions ….

WL: Wan Phing and I recently returned from church planting in Ecuador, South America. We now have a church of 25 regulars in Hope Quito, and Timothy (Shen Teng) and Phoebe (Peiru) are continuing the good work over there. We want to share with you some of our personal challenges and blessings of our missions journey.

The greatest worry that we had before leaving Singapore for Ecuador was our families. For my family, I was worried about their emotional and spiritual health as my only brother just passed away unexpectedly one year before our intended departure. My parents were not at all prepared for my brother’s sudden death from just a fall. To make things worse, my father was also heavily in debt as his business failed. He was almost on the verge of being made a bankrupt. At that time, I questioned God if it was the right time to go church-plant and leave my parents behind. I wasn’t sure if my parents would be able to get through this difficult time as they were not strong Christians yet.

Despite all my doubts, I sensed a strong reassurance from God that it was the right time to go church-plant. And so, I made up my mind to obey God and go. It was when I made this decision that things started to turn around for my parents. To my surprise, my parents became stronger Christians during this period of grief. They learned to trust God instead of doubting Him. In fact, my father became a missionary too, ministering to the ‘Orang Asli’ communities, indigenous people of Malaysia. My mother also stepped out of her grief slowly and helped my father in ministering to the ‘Orand Asli’ communities. It was amazing to see how God strengthened them despite having lost their son.

Then there was their financial woe. Nevertheless, they fasted, prayed and trusted in God for financial deliverance. The situation never improved (for more than 10 years!) until only while we were on the missions field. Someone actually offered to buy over my father’s failed business! My father was not able to recover all the money that he invested in the company but he was able to pay off all the debts. We know that this was God’s providence as no one in the right mind would want to buy over a failed business. All glory be to God!!

WP: As for my family, the greatest worry I had before leaving Singapore was the salvation of my parents and two younger sisters. I was afraid that I wouldn’t have the opportunity to bring them to know Christ.

But as I decided to obey God’s great commission, I saw how the impossible became possible. I had been sharing to my second sister about Jesus for many years. She thought Christianity was good but didn’t see a need for her to become a Christian herself. Just before I left Singapore, she said she had decided to become a Christian and then she said the sinner’s prayer. She even said that she was very glad that I was going to church-plant and that one day, she would church-plant too! I couldn’t believe what I heard! Praise God!

And that’s not all… my second sister started to share with my youngest sister who later also received Christ! And because my youngest sister received Christ, she also invited my pre-believing parents to church to see her perform in a Christmas skit… that was my parents first time in church together with my sisters! I’m waiting for the day that my parents receive Christ personally into their lives and I’m sure it’ll happen by God’s Grace.

So, when we make up our minds and obey God, He’ll bless us beyond what we can imagine! We hope that our testimony can inspire you to trust God as you obey Him… our God is the Giver of all good things!
