Title: Gideon – One Who Did Not Finish Well
Text: Judges 8:22-32
The first character we are focusing on is Gideon. Gideon started out fearful but by taking steps of faith, he fought against an army 120 000 Midianites and was victorious with 300 people. This is a clear testament of an only God moment. However, Gideon paid lip service to God but did not give Him the honour and glory. We can learn that pride resulting in self-reliance and idolatry showcasing a divided heart will detract us from ending well for God.
General Questions:
- Do you find it difficult to finish different tasks well? What are some hinderances in your life that stop you from completing a task well? What then do you do to keep yourself on track?
- Actions speak louder than words. Although Gideon said that God will be the king, he acted as if he was the king. What is the danger when our words and our actions do not tally? How can we make sure that we do not fall into this pit?
Perspective Questions:
- In the sermon, pride is linked with self-reliance. How is relying on yourself and pride related to each other? How does pride distance us from God?
- Any good thing or person that is our top or highest priority can become an idol and take God’s rightful place. What are some indicators that something or someone has become more important than God in our lives?
Application Questions:
- Pastor Jeff shared about handing Jesus the master key of our life and surrendering every area to Him. What are some areas of your life you would want to work on welcoming Jesus into? What concerns and worries do you have about surrendering fully to God?
- The sermon warned about the dangers of losing sight of God in success. How can we continue to hold on to God in our successes? How can the LG help each other in our times of victory?
The Jesus Way as a theme for our church is about 2 things: being reminded of God’s vision and mission and the fundamentals. These are the things that will keep us on track. The challenge for many people is not to start well but to end well. In these two weeks, we will learn from a negative example and a positive one on how to finish well in God’s kingdom.
