Title: God’s Part, Our Part
Text: 2 Peter 1:3-9

Trying to live a godly life can be daunting. We may doubt whether we can ever measure up. We may be discouraged because of our previous failings. What are some truths to encourage us to keep putting our best foot forward in pursuing godliness?

General Questions:

1) Read 2 Peter 1:3-4. What is the relationship between our reliance on God and striving in godliness? Is spiritual growth God’s work or ours?
2) Read 2 Peter 1:5-9. What are the qualities that mark a growing believer? Why is it important that a believer has these qualities in increasing measure?
Perspective Questions:

1) What do you think are common responses that believers have when they fall into sin or fail to act faithfully? Do these responses reveal whether they are mindful of their relationship God or whether they are simply concerned about their behaviour? How should they make sense of the times when they fell (i.e. what is the biblical truth that should undergird the way they interpret their failures)?

2) Read 2 Peter 1:3-4. How does the truth that there is divine power to give us everything we need for a godly life motivate us to grow? How does this truth change the way we think about God?

Application Questions:

1) Take some time to evaluate your life according to the qualities listed in 2 Peter 1:5-7. What are some qualities that you are growing in? What are some qualities that God may be prompting you to work on?

2) Peter stresses the need to “make every effort” to grow in godly qualities. This means that we should give our utmost to excel in godly living. Consider some steps, habits or routines that you can take on as you “make every effort” to grow in godliness.

3) How can we remind ourselves that God is backing us up? How can we involve the LG to keep us on track?
