Title: The Church is the Body of Christ
Text: Romans 12:3-8
General Questions:
1) God not only saved us but also placed us in a community where we can be rooted and grow. What do you think are the benefits of being part of a community? There could be times when being in a community can be challenging (for example disagreement, discouragement). What are some challenges that you can think of or have personally encountered?
2) In Romans 12:4, the body of Christ is described as many members forming different parts of a body. They serve different functions but are part of one body and belong to one another. How does this image help us to understand God’s idea of the Church?
Perspective Questions:
1) Spiritual gifts are God’s empowerment for His people to do His work. What do you think the church will be like if every member fully exercises his/her gift to serve? Conversely, what if some do not play their part?
2) Are there hindrances or fears that keep you from serving? What are they? What encouragement can we get from God’s word and promises?
Application Questions:
1) Think about the gifts that God has given to you. Are you using them to meet the needs of others and build up the body of Christ? Are there tangible ways that you can serve?
2) What are the ways that your LG has supported one another during this pandemic? How do you think you can serve one another more?
Series: The Church
Doing good to others is often easier said than done. What motivates believers to do good tirelessly? How does it affect the way we relate to the family of believers?
1) In the preceding verses, Paul states that “…a man reaps what he sows” (v7) and that “…whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” (v8). Given this backdrop, what could Paul have meant when he says that believers will reap a harvest at the proper time if they do not give up (v9)?
2) Why does Paul emphasise that Christians should do good to fellow believers in particular (v10)?
3) Given the context of Galatians, what could Paul have meant when he said to “do good”?
Perspective Questions:
1) In what ways have you become weary in doing good? Why? How does knowing that we will eventually reap a harvest help you in your weariness? What if this harvest does not occur during our lifetime?
2) The Bible says we will reap a harvest at the proper time if we do not give up. However, when God’s idea of “the proper time” does not fit our timetable, we might become frustrated and discouraged. How does such a response reflect our understanding and expectation of the way God works?
3) As believers, we are to regard each other as a spiritual family. Why is it sometimes difficult to treat each other as such? What are some perspectives and attitudes that need to be changed in order for us to regard other believers as family?
4) Compare and contrast our spiritual family with our biological family. In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different? How does the way we view and interact with our biological family influence how we relate to our spiritual family?
5) The reality is that the church may struggle, at times, to live up to God’s expectation of His people. Why might this be so? Despite the challenges, why do you think the church is still worth our commitment? Discuss.
Application Questions:
1) What opportunities has God provided in our lives for us to do good to our fellow believers? What is one step we can take today to do so?
2) What is one thing your LG could do together to grow as a spiritual family? Discuss.
Title: Making a Difference
Series: Heart Of A Disciple
Text: Matthew 5:13-16
God has sent disciples on His mission to be salt of the earth and light of the world. What does the mission involve?
General Questions:
1) What makes disciples the salt of the earth and the light of the world?
2) What may cause a disciple to lose his or her “saltiness” or hide his or her “light”?
Perspective Questions:
1) Why do you think Jesus finds the need to teach about the “salt and light” function of disciples? What does this tell you about the relationship between disciples and the world?
2) What is the difference between letting one’s light shine before others (Mt 5:16) and showing off one’s acts of righteousness before others (Mt 6:1)? How can believers tell when they are doing the former or the latter?
Application Questions:
1) In what ways are you challenged to be salt and light? What could be holding you back? What may help you to accomplish your God-given mission to be salt and light?
2) In His teaching on disciples being light of the world, Jesus uses the analogy of a brightly lit town on a hill that cannot be hidden (Mt 5:14). This illustrates the corporate effect of the community of disciples shining their light together. How can the LG shine together during pandemic times?
