Title: The Power of the Spirit
Passage: Acts 6-7

Often, we ask for power from God. But what do we want His power for? How does God intend the empowered life to be?

General Questions:

1) As a Christian, how would you define a supernatural life? According to the passage in Acts 6-7, what were some ways Stephen’s life could be considered supernatural, i.e. enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit?

Perspective Questions:

1) Clearly, Stephen led an empowered life.  Why do you think many believers today are not experiencing the power of the Spirit as much? What might be some hindrances they face?

2) The Holy Spirit empowers us to grow to be more like Jesus, for example in calmness, boldness and graciousness. Think about your journey with God so far. What are some areas the Holy Spirit has empowered you in? Recall specific moments or incidents. What was the role that you played in your character growth then, given that empowerment comes from the Spirit?

Title: When We Need Power

Series: Holy Spirit The Enabler Of Our Victory
Text: Eph 1:13-14
In the midst of all the pain, chaos and devastation we see in the world today, we can be steadfast in hope because we have the Holy Spirit. How does the Spirit secure this hope for us and what exactly is it that we hope for?
1) The Spirit Is Evidence That We Belong To God (Eph 1:13)
Just like the need for food and water, a sense of belonging is a human need. Deep down, there is an inherent desire to be accepted, associated or be part of something greater than ourselves. How does this need to belong affect the way people live their lives? Think about yourself and the people around you, and share some of these stories. How does belonging, or the absence of it, affect one’s hope in times of difficulty?
The Holy Spirit is the seal given by God as evidence that we belong to Him. We are His children. Who is God to you? What is His character like? What does it mean for you personally when you realise that you belong to Him? In challenging times, how does the truth that you are part of God’s people encourage or comfort you?
2) The Spirit Is Assurance That We Will Receive Our Inheritance (Eph 1:14)
Reflect upon your life experiences so far. Were there times when you know something good will be coming your way in the future, be it a reward, a solution to a problematic situation etc, but the waiting process proved really challenging? Share how the experience was like and what helped you to go through it. More specifically, what helped you to keep sight of the “end goal” while you wait? How did the Spirit empower you to deal with the difficulties in the midst of waiting?
The Holy Spirit is God’s pledge of our inheritance, that He will fulfil His promise and complete His plan in us. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest, how much are we looking forward to this inheritance at this point of time? What aspect of it are we most looking forward to? Why?

For some, tough times can cause them to lose hope and grow weary in trusting that God will fulfil His promises. For others, tough times lead them to yearn more for God and the eventual completion of His plan. What effect does challenges in life have on you and your faith in God? How does the assurance of our inheritance in Christ make a difference to how we face challenges? Practically, what is one thing we can now do differently during such times? How can we rely on the Spirit’s enablement to do so?

Title: When We Need To Live Anew
Series: Holy Spirit The Enabler Of Our Victory
Text: Romans 8:1-13

Being children of God, we know that we are not only forgiven sinners, but we can also live new lives to the fullest in Christ. At times however, the reality may seem further from this truth. Let us glean new understandings about our daily partnership with the Holy Spirit, and how it leads us to living a victorious life in Christ.

1) The Spirit Sets Me Free (v1 – v4)

What stops believers from believing that they have truly been set free from the power of sin? What can believers do to remind themselves and understand this truth? It is important to recognise that we need true repentance to have true freedom – what does true repentance looks like? Instead of dwelling in guilt, what should believers do instead?

2) The Spirit Guides Me (v5 – v8)

Romans 8:6 reminds us that the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. How can we know whether what we are doing is governed by the flesh or the Spirit? The natural way is to look at circumstances and allow what we see to guide the way we think. How can we allow the Spirit to guide us in seeing the world around us? What does a life that is in step with the Spirit looks like? What can we do to make sure that our lives are in step with the Spirit?

3) The Spirit Empowers Me (v9 – v13)

We know that through the empowerment of the Spirit we are able to live victoriously. However, at the same time we know believers can fall into sin. Why do you think this is so? The parking and power steering illustration highlights that the Spirit’s empowerment comes in tandem with our decision-making. Do you view the Spirit’s empowerment in the same way? What are some wrong ways that people can think about Spirit empowerment? How can understanding the power steering illustration help you as a believer to live a victorious life? What are some first/baby steps you need to make today to live a Spirit empowered victorious life?

2020 is declared to be a year of victory, but we may feel beaten and helpless in this pandemic. How can we lift our eyes from what we see around us to the God who is above us? How can we remember and rejoice in the victory that He has won for us?
